The itinerary has been planned as a first day of Thursday and final night of Monday in order to ensure you can visit the best of the markets and local events which are held on specific days of the week. We can arrange an alternative day of week to start your holiday but in this case the day by day itinerary may change slightly according to your choice of holiday dates.

Day 1

Arrive in Avignon for your 5 nights stay in this beautiful old town. This historic city on the banks of the river Rhone just demands exploration.

Don't miss a tour of the fascinating Papal Palace and the famous bridge but also the colourful Place de L'Horloge, the old city walls and the hillside gardens of the Rocher des Doms with panoramic views of the surrounding area, the town and the river.

Day 2

This morning a guided excursion visiting the perched villages of the Luberon including Roussillon and Gordes and then driving on to the pretty riverside town of Fontaine de Vaucluse. Excursion by mini bus collecting from your hotel at 09.00 a.m.

A free afternoon in Avignon to continue your exploration of this fascinating city.

Day 3

This morning an excursion visiting Orange and its famous Roman Theatre then continuing on to Chateauneuf du Pape for a tasting of the famous red wines. Excursion by mini bus, collecting from your hotel at 09.00 a.m.

A free afternoon in Avignon. Maybe visit one of the many art galleries and museums or take a boat trip on the River Rhone or simply stroll the old streets with their interesting shops and soak up the atmosphere of this medieval town.

Day 4

This morning travel by taxi to the riverside town of Isle sur la Sorgue for the Sunday morning antiques market. The riverside quays are an enchanting display of interesting artefacts and objets d'art. Many cafes and bars along the riverside for lunch.

Return to Avignon by taxi during the afternoon.

Day 5

A guided excursion this morning visiting the fascinating town of Arles with its stunning Roman remains and associations with Van Gogh. En route a photo stop in the medieval fortress village of Les Baux then visit the Carrieres de Lumiere multimedia exhibition of famous artists accompanied by music. Picasso is the theme of the show this year. The tour also includes a stop at the Saint-Paul de Mausole to see some of the sites painted by Van Gogh. Excursion by mini bus collecting from your hotel at 09.00

Day 6

Depart Avignon after breakfast.

 
 
Visits & Excursions

Our 5 night stay includes three escorted half day excursions as described on the itinerary - Lavender and the perched villages of the Luberon, Orange and Chateauneuf including wine tasting, St Rémy, Les Baux and Arles. The included excursions are by comfortable mini bus for 8 people, some are by larger coach. All are escorted by an English speaking driver/guide who collects you from and returns you to your hotel.

However there is a wide choice of excursion options to choose from which vary according to the time of year. Details of the most popular are listed below.

You may choose to substitute our included excursions for others or indeed add extra excursions.  Please note, some excursions may incur a supplement to the holiday price. If we cannot offer your chosen excursions we will suggest alternatives and advise of any supplement which may be required.

We can also arrange private excursions by taxi if you have a particular place you wish to visit which is not included in the excursion options below. Just ask us for details.

Discover the villages of the Luberon

The beautiful perched village of Gordes and the stunning village of Roussillon perched on its ochre cliffs. Visit also the lovely riverside town of Fontaine de Vaucluse. Half day tour.

Orange and Chateauneuf du Pape

Aix and the Gorges de Verdon

A whole day tour visiting the lively university town of Aix en Provence before continuing on across the Plateau de Valensosle (with a photo stop at lavender time) to pretty Moustiers-Sainte Marie and the stunning scenery of the Gorges de Verdon.

Lavender Tour

Whole day and half day tours available mid June to mid August visiting the lavender fields of the Luberon valley or the Vaucluse hills.

The Camargue and Arles

A whole day to enjoy the full Camargue experience visiting the fascinating medieval town of Aigues Mortes including a visit to the salt marshes, the seaside village of Saint Maries de la Mer and finally on to the lovely town Arles famous for its Roman remains and the superb Arena and Amphitheatre.

Nimes, Uzes and Pont du Gard

Nimes with its beautiful Roman monuments, the charming town of Uzes and the magnificent UNESCO world heritage site of the Pont du Gard

Wine Tour

The famous vineyards of Chateauneuf du Pape and Tavel with a wine-expert guide including wine tasting in two wine domaines to introduce you to the wines of the Rhone Valley and the concept of ‘terroir’.

Pont du Gard, Les Baux and Gordes

The UNESCO world heritage site of the Pont du Gard, the medieval fortress village of Les Baux plus Gordes and Roussillon, the most beautiful of the Luberon perched villages.Half day tour

Accommodation

The holiday described has been planned with hotel accommodation in the Hotel Cloitre St. Louis, a comfortable 4* hotel right in the heart of Avignon and ideally placed to explore the city with all the major sights just a short walk away. The comfortable rooms are charmingly decorated and the hotel has an excellent restaurant and a outdoor roof top swimming pool for the warmer months. Accommodation is in a twin or double room with private facilities.

The final choice of hotel for your holiday is determined by availability according to your holiday dates. If we cannot secure accommodation in the Hotel Cloitre St. Louis, we will advise you immediately and suggest an alternative, and advise any supplement which may be required. There are several good hotels in Avignon all of which we have personally selected.
